Rail Passes

I refer members to my previous circular dated 16/9/13 in which I advised that the QR decision on this matter was that they did not believe they were required to provide passes to Aurizon employees.

The Union sought members to take this matter up with their local members of Parliament whilst the Union explored the legal avenues available.

I am disappointed to say that a number of members have received responses from the LNP Members of Parliament which contain completely inaccurate information. There is a consistent line across all the responses which indicate that there is a standard response being provided to these members of Parliament in respect to the response they should give to their constituents about this matter.

They continue to refer to the fact that there is a reference to the passes in the Agreements for Aurizon workers which expires on 31 December 2013, in the event that a replacement Agreement has been finalised.

They suggest that it was agreed for the 25 year passes to expire at that point.

The references to the continuation of passes to 31/12/13 was in relation to employees reaching the qualification length of service during the life of the agreement to gain the right to the pass and did not relate to those people who already had passes prior to the commencement of the agreement.

The latest response from the LNP Members of Parliament to one of our members suggests that the passes were traded off for payment of $4,000 plus $1,000 in shares to Aurizon employees upon transfer to the privatised QRN. This again is absolute nonsense and at no point was the issue of passes even part of the conversation in respect of the Union seeking a payout figure for members who were being forced into the private sector.

At this point the RTBU, along with the ETU and the AMWU, have instructed solicitors who are currently examining all the relevant material available.

I will ensure members are kept up to speed with all the relevant developments on this matter as it occurs.
