Gold Coast Light Rail Extension to go Ahead

The RTBU welcomes the announcement today from the Deputy Premier and Transport Minister, Jackie Trad that tenders would formally open for stage two of the Gold Coast Light Rail construction.

Since the Palaszczuk Government came to power they have been attempting to persuade the Federal Government to provide some funding towards the proposed stage two extension, shelved by the Newman Government. Today Jackie Trad released a statement indicating that it now appears highly likely that the Federal Government will be prepared to fork out their share of the costs associated with building stage two.

The RTBU is pleased with the change of heart by the Federal Government and is welcomes the highly likely potential of the Turnbull Government being prepared to participate in the funding of the stage two extension along with the Palaszczuk Government and the Gold Coast City Council. The remarks by the Deputy Prime Minister, Warren Truss, was a positive contribution towards putting in place the necessary steps to allow this extension to be completed before the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

Stage two of this project will link the light rail system to the Queensland Rail Gold Coast line thus providing the opportunity for people to travel by a form of rail from Brisbane and beyond to the heart of the Gold Coast and back again.

It is understood that the final approval by the Federal Government has not at this stage been provided but there is a very strong expectation that this will be forthcoming in the very near future.

Unity is Strength
