Mandatory BAC Testing in All Operations Depots

Since the Introduction of Mandatory BAC Testing in All Operations Depots your union has been inundated by complaints about the privacy of the testing being done.

One of the cornerstones of any drug and alcohol screening is privacy and confidentiality of the process and this appears to have been lost in translation with the decision to carry out mandatory “pre-start testing” BAC testing.

I have been advised by members that this testing is being carried out in open sign-on areas in the likes of Traincrew depots and in groups of workers at pre-starts in Maintenance, Construction and Infrastructure environments.

Simply put the BAC testing device is handed around a circle of workers to be tested, there is no privacy or confidentially for the employees concerned.

This is simply not good enough and I have today written to the Executive Vice President & Chief Human Resources Officer for Aurizon outlining our concerns about the process. You will find a copy of that letter at the bottom of this circular.

I look forward to reporting to members the response received from Aurizon on this matter.

Unity is Strength
